About

The Massachusetts Coalition for Immigrant and Multilingual Learner Justice in Education (MA-CIMJE) works to address the complex challenges and opportunities facing immigrant-origin students, multilingual learners, and their families in the Commonwealth through sustainable, cross-sector, action-oriented collaboration. MA-CIMJE builds off of collaboration created by the 2025 Protect Education Equity Coalition convened by Massachusetts Advocates for Children, which successfully advocated for passage of the Protect Education Equity Law.

Mission & Vision

Bringing together more than 50 local and state-wide organizations working across Massachusetts in schools, community centers, legal services, and more, we are working collaboratively to tackle concrete issues facing our immigrant and multilingual young people—from academic mental health and disability support gaps to family engagement and educator professional development. Our goal is to reimagine immigrant education by breaking down silos between advocates across schools, legal services, community organizations, and advocacy groups.

We envision a future in which every immigrant-origin and multilingual student in Massachusetts thrives in schools that provide culturally and linguistically sustaining environments, equitable access to services, and pathways to success in school and beyond.

Our Work

Collaborative Action We coordinate focused, project-based working groups that bring together diverse expertise to address concrete challenges facing immigrant-origin and multilingual students and work on timely, actionable solutions that can be shared through our coalition to communities statewide.

Cross-Sector Collaboration We bring together advocates across sectors to set priorities and coordinate our collective work. Working together is essential to respond to the multi-faceted challenges that immigrant-origin and multilingual students face in education.

Sustainable Impact We leverage our network of 50+ organizations to respond quickly to emerging threats and opportunities, advocate for policy change, and ensure our work is grounded in the lived experiences of students, families, and educators.

Massachusetts is home to nearly one in four students who are immigrants or children of immigrants. These young people best thrive when teachers, families, neighbors, communities, and organizations work together. This site brings important information that teachers, school leaders, and families need about everything from enrollment steps to legal rights to and classroom and school strategies, best practices, and resources immigrant-origin and multilingual students need to thrive in Massachusetts schools. Leadership

MA-CIMJE is led by Massachusetts Advocates for Children (MAC) and Re-Imagining Migration (RIM) and in close partnership with a cross-sector Steering Committee. The Steering Committee reflects the diverse communities that have too often operated in silos within the education advocacy landscape, including educators, disability rights advocates, parent leaders, youth development organizations, and immigrant service providers. Together, they guide the coalition’s vision, priorities, and strategy.

MA-CIMJE builds on MAC’s longstanding commitment to systemic reform by bringing aligned partners together to drive coordinated, cross-sector advocacy that strengthens protections and expands opportunity for students across the Commonwealth. Learn more below!
